Congratulations to Beau Guimond on JYOP Win at Fair Hill!

 

A huge conrats must go to Beau 'Guey' Guimond for a very impressive win in the Junior/Young Riders Open Preliminary at Fair Hill horse trials on the weekend. Beau smoked a quality field at Fair Hill in his final outing before taking part in his first international threeday event at Bromont, Canada in a few weeks. He performed super on all three phases at Fair Hill, sending a clear message that he means business for his up coming challenge north of the border.

Purina Analyzes and Customizes Windurra Horses' Feed

Yesterday David Kurtz, our local Purina Rep for PA and MD, (717-314-5264) and Dr. Katie Young, a Nutrition Specialist from Kansas City, came out to our farm yesterday and evaluated the horses and their nutritional needs. Dr. Young writes a bi-monthly column for Equisearch.com and is a great resource for answering all sorts of questions about equine nutrition.

 We have changed Trading Aces to a high energy feed for horses in hard work, and we made a few changes to some of the hotter event horses, who have trouble containing their energy in dressage, to Purina Ultium. A lot of Silva’s dressage horses are in quite hard work and they made some changes to the amount of feed that some of her upper level horses receive, weighing their portions to customize their feed so that they are getting exactly what they need. 

We really tried to personalize each horse’s diet to make sure we get the best out of each horse. We also learned about some of the new Purina products, which we were aware of but didn’t know the benefits of, like the hay block which is a new technology for hydrating horses.

Clinic with an Olympian

Boyd is a 4 star eventing competitor. He was shortlisted for the Australian Olympic team on two horses, Yin Yang Yo and Neville Bardos. Since becoming a US citizen, Boyd has had great success competitively. He was named Rider of the year by the Chronicle of the Horse in 2011. He was talented enough to have not 1 but 3 horses on the selection list for the Olympics. On the chosen mount, Otis, Boyd had a successful outing in dressage and cross country for his first Olympics representing the US.  To find out more about Boyd go to  www.boydandsilvamartin.com. 

Boyd Martin is one of the best clinician I have ridden with in a long time. People who ride with him feel they were challenged along with their horse both mentally and physically without being overfaced. Your confidence reaches a new level. He demonstrates imagination in the exercises he teaches. He explains techniques for both stadium and cross country clearly and logically. My horses excelled during the class and I have used many suggestions afterwards. This is someone you don’t want to miss riding with.  

I am honored to be hosting Boyd at my farm after his debut at the Olympics. He does not do clinics very often, so come join in a fabulous learning experience!

SBF Balboa Has Sold!!

SBF Balboa recently sold, and we're delighted to see "Rocky" going just up the road to Kate Hick's stable, where he is going to focus his talents in the dressage ring with one of her clients.

Rocky is a wonderful example of the breeding efforts of our good friends and clients, Denise Lahey and Pierre Colin at Stony Brook Farm in Peterborough, NH.  Rocky is a registered Dutch warmblood out of Juventus, who's spectacular movement will continue to impress the dressage judges.  Thanks go out to Denise and Pierre for continuing to send us quality horses and for supporting our training program.

We're excited that Rocky will be moving over to Kate's facility and look forward to watching him rise through the levels in the dressage ring!

Boyd's Reflections on Jersey Fresh

 For the first time since I came to America I was purely a spectator at Jersey Fresh. I must say I think they had a stronger event than I can remember: the footing was great, the course was well-designed and we saw a large entry of quality combinations. Even more exciting, there was a huge batch of new faces competing there for the first time.

The highlight of the weekend for me was sitting back and watching my assistant rider Caitlin Silliman compete Ron and Densey Juvonen's Remington  XXV superbly in all three phases to win the CCI2*. Even though Remi is a seasoned campaigner, I can assure you it takes skillful riding to achieve the results they did, especially in the jumping phases. After a couple 'shonky' show jumping rounds in the lead-up to the big event, Caitlin and Remi definitely got it together yesterday to put in a clear round and win the event.

Caitlin also rode my up and coming star Steady Eddie, owned by Gretchen and George Wintersteen along with Denise Lahey and Pierre Colin. This was only Eddie's 3rd Intermediate start and I really threw Caitlin into the deep end at this competition. Eddie jumped beautifully and Caitlin rode to instructions, taking her time around the course and building his confidence for when I return to ride him again in a couple of weeks.

Phillip and Crackerjack

Phillip Dutton rode two of my promising CIC3* horses, Colin Davidson's Crackerjack and the Pancho Villa Syndicate's Pancho Villa. Both of these horses are extremely green at the advanced level and Phillip did me a huge favor taking them around a serious track. Crackerjack showed his class this weekend but had an uncharacteristic bobble at the water, reading a four-star hedge at the water and having a run-out, but he's shaping up to be a top-class horse.

Pancho, who's a new horse for me, took on his first three-star with PD in the irons and looked a little green around the course but with Phillip's expertise was jumping well. Unfortunately the third fence from home, a massive rail into water, Pancho just managed to clip his hind legs on the jump in and lost his footing on the landing, which saw the pair of them take a swim. Although it wasn't the ideal finish for Pancho, I believe he's a top quality horse that I need to get to know more and I will probably take him back for an intermediate run to build our partnership.

A big thanks to Phillip who did me a massive favor by riding both these horses while I'm hobbling around on crutches.

Finally I would like to congratulate a couple of riders I've been lending a hand to apart from Caitlin: Lillian Heard rode brilliantly in the 3* on Share Option and definitely showed her four-star potential. Erin Sylvester and Sara Gumbiner both rode their young, up and coming two-star horses brilliantly and will also be a force to be reckoned with!

Whilst not riding I got to take a close look at all of the top horses and riders this weekend. All of the horses that are about to embark on their international ventures to Saumur and Aachen looked brilliant. I am also starting to get the feeling that the WEG team next year will possibly be the strongest team the US has come up with since my arrival in this country.
