New Cadet SOLD

Advanced eventer New Cadet was sold this week to Pennsylvania up and comer Kerri Healy. "Caddy" has been with me since 2011, thanks to my long time supporter Anne Hennessy. I would like to wish Kerri all the best with him, and thank Anne for supporting this wonderful horse over the last few years.

More from Dressage at Devon 2014

Thanks to my support team!

It was a great weekend at Dressage at Devon! I couldn’t be happier, this was the first time since my accident that I really felt like I’m back, and it was exciting. Rosa felt fabulous and I’m lucky I’ve got that mare, she takes care of me. She’s stronger now and doesn’t feel green any more at this level, she’s very solid.

Everyone who could be was there was cheering me on, and those who couldn’t be there watched online. So many friends came out and were there for me and that was exciting. I talk to my mom all the time and she said when I told her I was going to ride at Devon, she just smiled and nodded but didn’t really believe it! My friends Mary Griffin and Kate Hicks were there too, and they also said they couldn’t believe I was coming back.  I think it was hard for the people who were right there with me through the accident, who weren’t sure what was going to happen. So it was awesome, and getting scores like that was exciting. We have a bright future ahead of us.

Jerusha and Rosa Cha, ready for the jog

My new group of girls, with Jerusha being head girl, and Jessie Crosby and Devon Seery, were amazing. Jerusha jogged Rosa for me and I really couldn’t have done it without her. You only see the rider in the arena, but it really takes a team to do what I do. It was a very quiet Devon for me though, I must say. I just had the young horse and Rosa; usually I have about 15 horses there so it seemed very quiet.

Reserve Champion!
On Saturday Boyd fell from Oscar (Trading Aces) when he slipped on wet grass during a gallop. He got a concussion but is doing alright; it was scary that he fell, though, especially just when I’m coming back from a head injury! We both push ourselves too hard, but fingers crossed he really is doing well. He came out to warm me up for the Freestyle on Sunday and it was great having him there.

Boyd Martin on Hannah Lu W
It was also fun having Boyd riding Hannah earlier in the week, and Mike did a great job on Joulua, and Kat Lissett and Caitlin did a good job with Boyd’s young horses. It was great for the young horses to get out in that environment and they did a great job riding them.

Caitlin Silliman riding Barry
Kymmy had a great weekend too and I’m so happy to see her doing well. It’s always exciting to see people who have been with me for so long go out and be great!

Mike Pindleton on Joulua
I have an appointment with the doctor next week to talk about eye surgery. This week I’m taking Danka Schoene, (training level), owned by Melinda Walton and Larry Smith, to the Regional Championships. Benny won the Championships at second level last year, so he’s not allowed to compete at that level again, and I haven’t had him out enough to do the third level championships.

The goal is to get to Kentucky for the US finals. You have to either be champion or reserve to compete there, and since I haven’t really done anything this year I’d love to do something big going forward.

Boyd’s "left hind lameness" is improving

Boyd in Physio

I’m pleased to say I’m ahead of schedule in the healing process; I recently went for my checkup, a couple weeks after surgery, and Dr. Phillip Principe is encouraged by the re-growth of bone around the fracture. He instructed me to start riding as soon as I can, as there’s no risk of re-injuring the leg; it’s more a matter of my effectiveness with my leg and my pain tolerance.

Healing Well

I find myself reunited at ATI physical therapy with Chris Dougherty, the man who helped me come back last year, and I’m currently seeing him three times a week, working on my mobility, core and strength exercises to keep myself fit and strong.

Focus on Courses: George Morris Clinic at Bridle Creek Farm

On Monday and Tuesday some of the top eventing riders in Aiken were treated to an awesome clinic by the Master of Equitation, George Morris. George worked on course analysis and course riding in this particular clinic. It was fantastic listening and learning the fine detail that George puts into the art of riding a course well. I feel like all of the riders and auditors gained information and knowledge from the lessons. It was a real honour and privilege working with George.

A big thanks must also go to Fernanda Kellogg and Kirk Henckels who hosted a lovely reception for George on Monday evening at their FoxFrolic Farm. It was great to hear in a speech all of the incredible insights he has in jumping. Another thanks must go to Bonnie Stedt, Gloria Callen and George & Gretchen Wintersteen whom sponsored some of the 'up and coming' riders' lessons.

Thanks to Allie Conrad for the photos. Enjoy these "George-isms" courtesy of Allie and The Chronicle of the Horse: http://www.chronofhorse.com/photos_videos?nid=47695

Fun Sunday Jumping Clinic in Tryon, NC

Eric Dierks
It was a fantastic day teaching jump lessons at Eric and Trayce Dierks’ Renovatio Farm in Tryon, NC

Rachael Wood with Boyd - courtesy Stephanie Wood
We had an enthusiastic group of riders sitting on novice right up to advanced horses, all ready to learn, and the facility was fantastic. I very much enjoyed getting out there and teaching the clinic.

Boyd
I had the riders work on some turning exercises and gymnastics to get the horses jumping well and rideable, then towards the end of the session I added in some technical lines that you typically come across in today’s jumping courses.

Katharine Knauz
Thanks to the Dierks for hosting the clinic, and to our sponsors who provided a few tokens of appreciation for the riders to take home with them.

Scout's Saturday Morning Dressage at Devon Update

Silva and Trading Aces (Oscar) in the Dixon Oval
Two days and countless outfit changes later, there is still no word from Deb. There are also many more dominating performances to discuss. Bear with me here because Windurra had a lot of horses competing, and organization is not a highlight for my brain.

Silva and Boyd with the multi-talented Oscar
On Thursday, Silva rode Zoran and Trading Aces to 2nd and 4th in the 4th level, and Zoran again on Friday put in another top-notch performance.

Zoran

Gracia and Colin also put in a great test, only to be topped by her BEAUTIFUL test with Colin on Friday night. It was her first time doing 4th level, at Devon, and managing to place well in the top 10 against well-known riders in a huuuge class is something to be truly proud of.

Silva and Duvent also rode 4th level on Thursday, crushing the competition and grabbing the big win, just to do it again on Friday with an even more amazing test.

Benny getting some love
Benny, another one of Melinda and Larry's incredible horses, had similar results, ending up in the top three in what I am pretty sure is the biggest 5-year-old class ever to happen anywhere.

Benny
Kymmy and Hot Date had incredible performances both Thursday and and Friday. She rode like a true professional out there and has one of the most exciting up and coming horses around. This shows in her top 4 placing against dozens of well known horse and rider pairs. Congrats Kymbo, your success is really inspiring, and something to look up to.

The Cha was also incredible, coming in 6th out of 43 horses with a 68%. She set the bar since she was unfortunately first to go. Silva and Rosa Cha are a truly incredible. I want
spot in the order of go! to be them when I grow up. Stay tuned to their win today...
much better spot in the order of go!

Team Windurra...it takes a village...
Michelle also rode two stunning tests putting up there with the top contenders, continuing my realization that we somehow have managed to form an unstoppable group of juggernaut horses and riders.

Something else happened on Friday that was a bit disappointing.. you see, Kymmy was needed to collect Silva's awards since Silva was competing during the ceremony, and word around the block is Kymmy decided to opt out of the victory lap...on foot. That lap was well earned Kymberly Pullen, and more importantly I was looking forward to watching you canter around the Dixon Oval without a horse under you! Just imagine it: ribbons flowing elegantly from your belt loops while you held imaginary reins and acted slightly spooky because of the crowd going wild. It would have been magical...lol.

Boyd Martin Clinic at Stony Brook Farm

We had another fantastic clinic over the weekend at Denise Lahey and Pierre Colin's Stony Brook Farm in Peterborough, NH. We had a lot of great horses and riders but Pierre and Cedric really stole the show. Denise and Pierre are great supporters, owning Steady Eddie and SBF Cortez, and as members of the Trading Aces Syndicate. It's always fun to spend the weekend at their farm teaching and enjoying the beautiful countryside of New Hampshire.

Trading Aces Leads After Dressage at Millbrook Horse Trials

It was good to be back on the big horses once again, with four competing in the advanced at Millbrook Horse Trials in NY. Oscar put in a great test to lead the division; I think Silva's dressage training and showing with him has been especially helpful. He was focused and in front of the leg even though it was slashing rain during our test. This is our first event since Rolex Kentucky and my ankle surgery, and we are both excited to be back eventing together. The plan is for him to march around the advanced here and make sure he is bursting with confidence before we head up to Richland Park.

Pancho put in his standard performance - he's such a well trained and talented horse but we are still getting to know one another and build a partnership. Crackers and New Cadet both put in good tests; they are both still green at this level, and I'd say it'll be about six months before they are flawless.

Crackerjack (Photo EventingNation.com)
My ankle is feeling about 70% at this point - it hurts and I only have limited mobility, but I'm hoping it'll hold up through the weekend. I'm not on meds anymore, and when Lindsey is going down the line icing and wrapping the horses in the evening I'm there with them, icing and wrapping my ankle.

My four youngsters are doing dressage today: Eddie, Shadow, Cortez and Bally. I feel that they are a promising group of horses and I'm really looking forward to how they develop for the future.

Cross-country should be fun. After the rain the footing looks to be in good shape. I haven't seen a big course like this in a few month but I'm sure I'll get the feeling back quickly.

MCTA Horse Trials

Boyd reports from the sidelines:

Caitlin on Ray Price with Amy and Me
With my surgery having taken place on Wednesday, I decided to sideline myself for last weekend's MCTA horse trials.  Most of the young horses had an outing with my 4-star riding assistant Caitlin, along with eventionTV host Dommy Schramm.

Ray & Wally
It was a great opportunity to watch the horses that I usually ride competing with these two in the tack.  I must say that all the horses ooze with class, and it's very exciting to think how awesome they could all be in a couple of years. Both Dom and Caitlin did a stellar job not only competing the horses, but putting up with me heckling from the sidelines.

Greenwich Park to Millbrook

Partyboy at Millbrook
After dealing with the torture and disappointment of a less than ideal finish to the Olympic Games, Lindso and I jumped on a Delta flight from Heathrow to join Caitlin and the horses at Millbrook Horse Trials in New York. Millbrook puts on a sensational event every year and there was no better place to get over the heartbreaking finish of the Olympics by hopping on a great group of up and coming horses over the weekend. I must take my hat off and thank Silva, Caitlin, Sara, Beau, Jen and Felix for keeping the event horses in superb condition whilst I was away.

Millbrook Horse Trials is an event that is included in the PRO Tour Series. PRO is a fantastic organization here in America that is aiming to improve the events around the country for riders, owners, sponsors and eventing fans. I took the time on the weekend to commentate during the cross-country of the advanced division in the VIP tent, giving the audience the inside scoop about the horses and riders partaking in the challenges of the cross-country course. I urge anyone who is a fan of eventing to get involved with PRO by signing up for the level of membership that suits them.

The final results from a great weekend of eventing by our crew were:

Open Intermediate A
Catch a Star, owned and ridden by Caitlin Silliman, 5th
Arundel, owned and ridden by Abbie Golden, 20th

Trading Aces, "Oscar"
Open Intermediate B
Trading Aces, owned by Trading Aces Syndicate, 4th
Crackerjack, owned by Lucy Boynton and Colin Davidson, 10th

Open Preliminary A
New Cadet, owned by Anne Hennessey, 13th

Open Preliminary B
Partyboy, owned by Fernanda Kellogg and Nick Meyers, 4th

Open Training A
SBF Cortez, owned by Denise Lahey and Pierre Colin and ridden by Caitlin Silliman, 10th

Open Training C
Quinn Himself, owned by Bonnie Stedt and ridden by Caitlin Silliman, 1st

I must admit I was very startled to see longtime owner and supporter, Anne Hennessey's arm over the weekend. Anne has taken on a retired racehorse as a project who gave her a little love bite on her arm last Tuesday. As you can see in this photo, Anne's new horse definitely has an appetite!

Anne Hennessey
The three four-star horses, Neville, Otis and Remington arrive back from England today. I'm sure all three boys are looking forward to sleeping in their own beds after an intense trip. I myself am also looking forward to being reunited with my two show cats, Manny and Kostya.

"Big Mike" Barisone Jets in for Olympic Preparations

I would like to thank members of the Otis Barbotiere Syndicate who rallied together to send Michael Barisone over to England for a second time.  "Big Mike" trains both Silva and me in the art of dressage back home in the States.

He was here for four days working with me on all my horses here in the Olympic training camp.  The first two days he spent working on the horses' engagement and connection, then on days three and four, we started performing the four-star test that will be ridden at the Games.

Otis with groom Lindsey Taylor

Linda Zang is also over here, and judged the test.  We then did a video review with Michael and Linda, looking at parts of the test that can be improved.  All in all, the horses are going well.  The preparation is looking good for the big one in a couple of weeks.
