Thanks to Our Sponsors

One thing I’m feeling very confident about heading in to Rolex Kentucky is our preparation. I’ve put the horses on a new feed from Purina called Super Sport, which helps keep the energy levels up with all the hard work they’re doing. With the high grain diet required for all this energy, combined with travel and competition stress, ulcers can be a concern, so we have them all on Smart Gut from Smartpak, which is a feed additive that definitely helps with their digestion.

I’ve also partnered with Stuebben and it’s been a wonderful experience riding in their saddles; I get a great, secure feel and the horses’ backs feel good. We’ve been training and competing in the Majyk Equipe show jumping and cross-country boots and I’m happy to say the horses’ legs have been well protected throughout the year.

We are extremely lucky to be preparing the horses on Attwood footing. Galloping on Will Faudree’s track, training at Stable View over the winter in Aiken, and now at home at Windurra, the footing is great for the horses’ legs.

The horses and I are also well dressed: I’ve been looking very fashionable in my Ariat apparel and feel well protected with my Charles Owen helmet and body protector. Shires kept the horses warm and toasty through the cold winter and they’re in good condition with nice shiny coats.

When you're browsing the spectacular trade fair at Rolex Kentucky, be sure to look up our sponsors and thank them for supporting eventing, and take the opportunity to pick up some of their excellent products.

Morven Dressage Update from Pam Murphy

Pam on Rio
Who goes to a dressage show over Easter weekend after a winter like the one we had in PA? January wasn't fun, February was awful and March wasn't much better. It was all you could do to just keep the horses fit. (As context, Devon Seery, Amy Heron and I were part of the 'left behinds' at Windurra while Silva, Jerusha and Jessie, and most of the show horses, went off to do the sunny Florida circuit. Thanks to Sally Lofting and Alexa for taking such good care of us while Silva was away!)

Silva on Duvent

Silva left us strict orders to "just keep the horses going" and we dutifully tried to do so. Amy and I are thankful to Devon, Silva's super working student and most wonderful apprentice, for being such a terrific minder and guide while Silva was away. Now Silva is back and despite the lack of lots of training and the terrible weather, (and the fact I was away in Japan for two weeks prior to the show), we decided to head to Virginia for Morven Park's first recognized dressage show this past weekend. We had a terrific time and happily, Melinda Walton and Larry Smith were there to cheer us on and watch their horses go: Benefactor RRS (Benny), Duvent, Constantine RRS (CeCe) and Rio Royale RRS.

Benny and Duvent, Melinda, Devon and Silva
Silva rode Benny and CeCe, and of course, Benny was awesome and had the high point score in third level. He is perfect, willing and one of the best young dressage horses ever! Larry and Benny are soul mates and shows are always more fun when Larry comes ...

Larry and Benny
CeCe was also super and Amy, her owner, was happy with her new red, while and blue towels for CeCe's first, second and fourth placings! While Amy didn't ride at this show, she was a great help with all the horses and her cheerfulness and support were most appreciated by all.

Amy with Silva on Cece

This was Devon and Duvent's first time to compete as a team and what a team they were ... and what a force they will be in the future! Devon is a smooth, calm and elegant rider and Duvent, while not as calm, is equally elegant and talented. It will be exciting to see them evolve over the next few months. Despite this being their first time out, Dev got a first in blue and white in her Third level test 3 classes - both were qualifying scores!

The Fork Horse Trials

The Fork Horse Trials produced another fantastic event in Norwood, NC. I took most of my upper-level horses down there to participate. The cross-country course was a good confidence-builder for the three-day events looming in the not too distant future. In the three-star Crackerjack and Master Frisky put in stellar performances. Crackers got a little excited in the dressage but jumped really well and Mikey put in a workmanlike performance; both horses look in good shape for Rolex Kentucky. In the advanced Pancho Villa was very impressive, finishing second around a testing course. In the Intermediate Steady Eddie won his division and the two-star horses, Welcome Shadow SBF Cortez, put in great performances too.

RESULTS:

CIC***

6th – Master Frisky, owned by Stephen Blauner

20th – Crackerjack, owned by Lucy Boynton

Advanced Test B

2nd – Pancho Villa, owned by the Pancho Villa Syndicate

CIC**

10th – Welcome Shadow, owned by Gloria and Craig Callen

Welcome Shadow Video Part 2

15th – SBF Cortez, owned by Denise Lahey and Pierre Colin

 Intermediate A

1st – Steady Eddie, owned by George and Gretchen Wintersteen and Denise Lahey and Pierre Colin

 LIVE RESULTS: http://www.evententries.com/livescoring/15840.html

Now we are back in PA and the weather is good so we will be putting the cross-country jumps out soon; we’ll let everyone know when the course is open for schooling.

Visit to Purina reconfirms Martins’ feed choice

FOR INFORMATION:  Nancy Johnson, 610-932-8521       nancy.johnson@oxfordfeedlumber.com
Visit to Purina reconfirms Martins’ feed choice
OXFORD, Penna. – March 31, 2015 -- Amid a busy winter schedule training and competing down south, Boyd and Silva Martin found time for a visit to the Purina Animal Nutrition Center in Gray Summit, Missouri.  Purina is proud to have both of the Martins as members of their ambassador team.  Comprised of professionals in a variety of disciplines, the ambassadors devote their time and share their knowledge and experience in an effort to give back to the youth and families in the industry.
The 1200-acre working farm is fully staffed by veterinarians, nutritionists and other professionals who research, develop and perfect Purina Mills’ complete product line.
“I was just blown away by the amount of research they do there!” claims Boyd.  “I know Purina makes great feed, that’s why all our horses eat Purina. But I had no idea how much research, effort, and testing goes into perfecting these products.”
Boyd admits that the staff far exceeded what he expected.  “The place was just full of top-notch vets and equine PhD scientists -- with all kinds of expertise!”
In addition to touring the research facility, Boyd and Silva had an opportunity to meet and visit with several other Purina Ambassadors, ironically all from Western disciplines.  “It was really fascinating talking with them -- ropers, barrel racers and other rodeo professionals -- and learn how much goes into developing their horses,” he says.  “Some have very different requirements in their diet and that’s what Purina does so well – no matter what the discipline they have the right feed for every lifestyle.”
“Silva and I really learned a lot more about the wide variety of Purina products too,” he says.  He was especially impressed with two supplements, Amplify, formulated for weight gain, performance, shine and bloom and Supersport, a targeted amino acid formulation for muscle performance, exercise capacity and recovery.  “I added Amplify to a few horses’ diets and also put some Supersport on hard exercisers.  It’s only been about a month and I am really amazed with the results.”
Boyd also praises his local Purina dealer, Oxford Feed & Lumber, which delivers Purina Ultium and Strategy to their farm, Windurra, as well as his Oxford and Purina reps, confirming that are easily accessible and happy to help him customize feeding programs for individual horses.
“I am really glad we made the trip to Missouri. I never realized just how much goes into developing these feeds.  The lengths they go to for quality is unbelievable and it shows in the appearance and performance of our horses!”

Revving Up for Rolex

Pancho Villa at Fair Hill 2014. Jenni Autry Photo
I’ve got three entries in for Rolex Kentucky this year: Master Frisky, Crackerjack and Pancho Villa. They all three first-timers at the four-star level and have all had a pretty impressive spring.

Crackerjack, who’s the wild man of the group, is owned by the late Colin Davidson and his mother Lucy Boynton. Crackers is an American Thoroughbred by the legendary stallion Aberjack. Crackers is a real character in the barn and is a very careful jumper who often gets too keen and too brave to the fences. Last weekend at the Carolina International in Southern Pines, NC he felt fantastic and finished in 5th place.

Stephen Blauner of Millbrook, NY owns Master Frisky, who’s a well-bred, quintessential Irish horse: his sire is Master Imp and he’s out of a Clover Hill mare. He’s the most laid-back of the trio; he’s very smart in the dressage and has wonderful stamina cross-country.

Pancho Villa is a horse I’ve had for a couple years now. He’s owned by the Pancho Villa syndicate and is probably the greenest of the three, so I’ll see how he goes at the Fork and then decide whether to run Jersey Fresh or Rolex.

Caitlin, Lillian and Erin are also entered at Rolex this year. They’re all on seasoned four-star horses now and I’m expecting they’ll all do well.

Looking at the Pan-Am Games this summer, all of these horses are potential Pan-Am team horses; I’m sure after the spring three-day events the team will start to pick itself.

I’ve also got two potential three-star horses, Welcome Shadow and SBF Cortez, entered at Jersey Fresh. They are young but experienced two-star horses now and with a good performance there I feel they could also throw their hat in the ring to be considered to represent the US in Toronto.

All of these horses will compete at The Fork in North Carolina on Easter weekend.

Carolina International CIC***

Master Frisky. Leslie Threlkeld for EventingNation.com

The Carolina International this weekend in Southern Pines, NC was a huge success. Every year the event becomes bigger and better and stronger. The competition was fierce, with some of America’s best horses and riders. I took three greener, up and coming advanced horses in the CIC: Lucy Boynton’s Crackerjack, Stephen Blauner’s Master Frisky and Pancho Villa, owned by the Pancho Villa Syndicate, and all three had strong performances.

Master Frisky came very close to winning the event, finishing second behind Phillip Dutton and I’m Sew Ready, This was a great preparation for Rolex and Master Frisky has impressed so far.

Crackerjack has always been a bit of a wild man to ride and I must say this weekend he really started to settle down and show his maturity.

I was also very happy with Pancho; the longer I have him the more we seem to be building a partnership and I feel like he has the makings of a big-time horse.

Welcome Shadow. Allie Conrad photo

I also rode my three younger horses in the Intermediate and two-star: Craig and Gloria Callen’s Welcome Shadow, Denise and Pierre’s SBF Cortez and Daryl Layfield Insley's William Street. All of these horses gave me great rides, especially on the cross-country, which was a very testing course.

Carolina is really raising the standard for quality events in America. They have an awesome show jumping course designer in Mark Donovan, good commentary and organization, and the cross-country course is inviting and well designed
in a nice flowing course. Having the event live streamed I believe adds an extra dimension to the sport, helping create interest worldwide for what’s happening in the USA. The owners were looked after brilliantly with a huge amount of effort put into making sure they had a fun party and fantastic amenities. It was a real pleasure being part of the competition.

RESULTS

The Windurra eventing team is now migrating north to PA where the weather is rapidly improving. It has been a great winter at Stable View and I very much appreciate training out of this wonderful facility. It still look forward to seeing my wife and my two cats and sleeping in my own bed at night.

Balustree Silver Lining SOLD

We’re proud to announce that Balustree Silver Lining, AKA "Herbert", has been sold to one of Sally Cousins’ students in Pennsylvania. Herbert has been with us, thanks to Ashley Andrews of Millbrook, NY, for the past three months. Both Caitlin and I have competed Herbert in four or five horse trials and he was very successful. We wish his new owner all the best and thank Ashley for placing him with us while we marketed him.

Final Show in Florida 2015

It was awesome to finish off the winter season this past weekend with Stately scoring a 72.5% in the I-1 Freestyle! We are thrilled with his progress!

Stately has always been our “problem child” and Faye Woolfe has been an amazing owner. This weekend she ensured that  Stately and his groom Jerusha were perfectly taken care of. Unfortunately Faye couldn’t be there this weekend but she made sure that her friend and our big supporter Gloria Callen brought her walking shoes to walk Stately around for hours!

Gloria Callen

It’s been a great winter season with all the horses, especially my CDI horses. A huge thank you to all my owners/supporters for making this possible for me. I couldn’t do it with out them. It’s great to be back in the ring after a tough year and it’s so encouraging to have all the support around me.

Stately at the Veterinary Inspection

Another thank you to my sponsors for keeping all my horses looking and feeling great. Stubben has made a huge effort to keep the horses comfortable with their saddles and bridles. Ariat, Charles Owen, and Middy N’ Me keep me and the horses in high fashion. SmartPak not only supplies us with their incredible supplements but is always there to send us anything we need! And of course Purina keeps our horses well-fed and looking in tip top shape.

Jerusha and I are on our way home while Jessie waits for the shipper to load the rest of the horses. Devon is at home and has been a HUGE help taking care of the horses there and preparing everything for our return. I am looking forward to seeing my students/friends at home and getting back into a rhythm with them! It was really a great season and Jerusha and Jessie worked so hard without any full days off. I am so impressed with how they held up.There was one afternoon that we took off to go to West Palm Beach and the girls enjoyed the beach by falling asleep to the sound of the waves.

Passed out!
I have very much enjoyed working with Michelle Folden and Debbie Stanitski again this year. They had some great success this season and it’s always a blast hanging with Michelle and her crew.

A New Career for Trading Aces

Oscar at the 2013 Rolex Kentucky three-day event

After winning the $50,000 Wellington Eventing Showcase, Trading Aces stayed on in Florida with Marcia Kulak, who put him in training and transformed the world-class eventer into an equitation horse. While Oscar has always shown a lot of talent, he simply lacks the endurance to be successful in upper-level eventing. We hope that he will have a happy and successful future with his new rider, Alexandra Pielet, in the junior ranks.

Thanks to The Chronicle of the Horse and EventingNation.com for blogging about Oscar's sale today:

Aiken Masterclass a Roaring Success

Yesterday evening’s Masterclass was a roaring success at Stable View Farm. Both Phillip and I were a little bit nervous and unprepared going into the evening but thanks to a great group of supporters I think we managed to pull off an awesome show. Dom Schramm was the key to keeping everyone entertained all night as our MC and he had music playing during all the quiet moments.

The horses Phillip and I demonstrated on were fantastic. Basically we decided to showcase some of the big-time horses like Shamwari and Mr. Medicott as well as some of our younger horses like Icabad Crane. We wanted to make the evening about how we train the horses at home and explain different exercises that we utilize. A few of the young horses got quite wild but that gave us the opportunity to explain to spectators how we deal with those situations and what we do when things don't go as planned.

The evening was capped off with the legendary Neville Bardos meeting the spectators. He was out for about an hour eating carrots and getting photos with his adoring fans, living the good life.

I think last night exceeded our expectations. We had around 350 people there and all the money earned - it looks like around $15,000 - went straight to charity. I have to give a huge shout-out to Stable View who not only provided a fantastic facility with lighted indoor and sound system; they also had a full-on bar for everyone to enjoy, and on top of all that they are going to match the amount of money generated last night with a matching contribution. I must say I’m very impressed.

New Mushroom Compost

A big thanks to Jamie Hicks of Hicks Brothers for spreading a thin layer of mushroom compost over our cross-country schooling course in Pennsylvania. One of our goals this year is to have fabulous footing for all the horses in training.

Jamie is also in charge of footing for Plantation Field horse trials and is donating a lot of his time and effort to spreading mushroom compost, seeding, mowing and aerating the footing at Plantation. I would urge anyone looking for quality hay or straw to consider buying it from Hicks Brothers as a thank you for their efforts in supporting the sport of eventing.

Palm Beach Dressage Derby 2015

Stately at the Awards

What a great weekend at Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI! The highlight of our show was yesterday when Stately scored 71.9% in his first-ever freestyle and was highest placed American and third overall. Rosa did her best test yet and scored 71.2 % to finish fifth.

Boyd and Silva
I had a big support team there !! Faye Woolf, Boyd, Ann Laver ,Gloria Callen, Melinda Walton and Larry Smith and of course the girls that have the horses look so amazing and keeping my life organized, Jerusha and Jessie. Debbie McDonald helped me in the warm up and Robert Dover was there watching my rides as well. Pretty cool.
Robert Dover and Debbie MacDonald on the sidelines
In the PSG Stately finished 7th with 70.8% and Rosa finished 13th with 69.2% in a big class with over 50 horses.

In the Intermediare 1 Stately finished in 6tjh place with 69.7% and Rosa finished 18th with 66.2%. Rosa and I had an off day but she was back to her normal self on Sunday. It was so nice that Boyd came this weekend to cheer us on! We all know he is not the best spectator! Since Melinda and Larry came for a surprise visit I rode Benny in 3rd level test 3 on Saturday and of course he was perfect and finished third .

PSG at Dressage Derby

Thanks to student Debbie Stanitski for snapping this photo of Rosa this morning!

Stately (Aesthete was a star yesterday and scored 70.816% in the PSG at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby. It was his best test yet! Rosa went first thing this morning and scored 69.211%.

There are still about 14 horses to go, but currently that puts both horses in the top ten in a big, competitive class. More updates later!

Masterclass Coming Up Soon

Phillip and I have always toyed with the idea of doing a Masterclass and we have a fantastic opportunity to pull it off with the use of the indoor arena here at our winter base, Stable View. We're also lucky enough to be in Aiken in the midst of numerous eventing fans, so we feel like now is the time to pull it off.

Dom Schramm will be the host of the evening and will be going around with a microphone doing the Q and A with the crowd. We're still figuring out the formant but some of the stars from our barn will be in the production, including Neville, Shamwari, Icabad and Mr Medicoot.

Phillip and I are hoping to give people insight into how we train horses at all levels. It should be a fun evening and all the money will go to charity, with Stable View matching whatever we earn and donating as well.

Entry $25 at the door, $10 for kids and Young Riders. Hope to see you there.

Kicking Off the 2015 Palm Beach Dressage Derby

Rosa and Stately passed the jog at the Palm Beach Derby. After the jog I had two lessons with Debbie McDonald; I was very happy with both horses and so was Debbie. Since the Prix St. George is a huge class again they had to split it into two days, so Stately will go today at 3:53pm and Rosa will go at 8:08 tomorrow morning. The top 30 finishers in the PSG will do the Intermediare 1 on Saturday and the top 15 from that class will do the freestyle on Sunday.

Also I'm thrilled to have won the best dressed award in the jog! Thanks to my friend Michelle Folden for the beautiful top that she gave me as a birthday present and to Show Chic for sponsoring the award.

Welcome Back to White Fences 2015

Lance
We had a good show weekend at Welcome back to White Fences. I started the show off with Elaine and Bruce Warner's Sir Lancelot in third level . What a cool guy he is !! He won his class with 70.38% .

My next horse was my long time friend Melinda Walton and Larry Smith's Benefactor RRS. This was only his third third level and he is barely seven years old . He was second with 70.28%. He now has never scored under 70% in third level!!
Benny

It was a rainy and wet Saturday but the horses wrere troopers. Next was Gloria Callen and Anne Laver's Bright Side. Eddy is a great horse but such a baby still. He made some unfortunate mistakes in his first level test but still scored 67%. I rode Kirsten Jepp's fabulous young horse Estival Star in his only second training level show next. He is a very fancy 4-year-old and such a good boy! He won with 70%.

On Sunday I rode Bonnie Stedt's Zoran in his second Intermediare 1. He was still a little green at that level but we finished second on 67%. Last but surely not least I rode Rosa Cha's daughter ,Sara Reese and Joan Fenton's Hannah Lu W, in training level. She was such a good girl and she feels more and more like her mother. We finished second in the class!! VIDEO

First-Rate Gallops at Will Faudree's Farm

Master Frisky

We shipped up to Will Faudree's Gavilan Farm in Southern Pines, NC last week and made us of his new gallops with footing by Attwood Equestrian Surfaces. Will just recently put in this fantastic new gallop and it's an incredible mile and 1/8 resistance gallop that is completely uphill, with unparalleled Attwood Pinnacle footing. It was well worth the drive to put the four-star horses through the work of going up three times on this amazing footing. The Attwood Pinnacle consists of sand that has been coated with polymer and mixed with a variety of  fibers. It gives great cushion and galloping up it felt like the horses were hardly touching the ground. One of the biggest headaches we've encountered in preparing the horses for Rolex is keeping them sound due to the intense amount of work it takes to keep them fit, and I'd like to thank Will and Attwood for allowing us to use this gallop to aid in our preparations.
